Lesney Toy Factory – Matchmakers Wharf
THE CHALLENGE
To regenerate a factory in to attractive residential homes without the need for expensive on-going maintenance costs.
THE SOLUTION
The grey balconies complimented or merged with the different blocks’ facades, without detracting from the design features and multi-coloured facades.
The balconies were coated in a thermal pure zinc coating prior to applying the coloured top coats, ensuring a long-life anti-corrosion barrier was in place to avoid expensive maintenance costs.
THE DETAIL
Located in Hackney overlooking the River Lee, opposite the Hackney Marshes and near the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the Lesney Toy Factory was regenerated in to the colourful residential development known as the Matchmakers Wharf.
On a residential development of this scale, coating failure would be expensive and time consuming to remedy. Not only would there be the repair costs to take into account, but also the disturbance caused to the residents. To avoid this happening, Bradleys coated the balconies with a strong anti-corrosive pure zinc coating first, then applied the top coat, resulting in balconies that look great both on the surface and under the surface.
The Matchmakers Wharf won the 2013 Housebuilder Award – Best Design of Four Storeys or More and has been commended for several other awards.
