Dulwich Picture Gallery, Artplay Pavillion
THE CHALLENGE
The Artplay Pavilion at Dulwich Picture Gallery, designed by Carmody Groarke Architects, presented a demanding finishing challenge, requiring a bespoke colour and gloss level match across both aluminium and mild steel architectural elements. Achieving a consistent, high-quality appearance across two different substrates was essential to maintaining the architect’s design vision.
Alongside the aesthetic requirements, robust corrosion protection and long-term durability were critical to ensuring the finished metalwork would withstand environmental exposure while retaining its distinctive appearance.
THE SOLUTION
Bradleys worked closely with Carmody Groarke Architects to develop a bespoke finishing solution that delivered the desired aesthetic consistently across both aluminium and mild steel. Through careful preparation, specialist corrosion protection systems and precise finishing techniques, we achieved a harmonious appearance across the different substrates without compromising performance.
The result was a distinctive, high-quality architectural finish combining visual consistency, lasting durability and effective corrosion resistance, bringing the architect’s vision to life.
THE DETAIL
Founded in 1811 and opened to the public in 1817, Dulwich Picture Gallery in South London is recognised as the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery. Designed by renowned architect Sir John Soane, the Grade II* listed building is celebrated for its pioneering architecture and exceptional collection of Old Master paintings.
As part of the Gallery’s most significant redevelopment in over 20 years, the new ArtPlay Pavilion, designed by award-winning architects Carmody Groarke and completed in September 2025, introduces a striking contemporary addition to this historic setting. Nestled within the Gallery’s expanded Sculpture Garden, the Pavilion provides an imaginative, sensory-rich environment where children can explore art through creative play, with experiences inspired by the Gallery’s historic paintings.
Combining thoughtful architectural design, sustainable construction and innovative learning spaces, the project creates an exciting connection between the Gallery’s remarkable heritage and a new generation of visitors.
