GPE’s 1 Newman Street
THE CHALLENGE
The client wanted a blackened steel finish in their main foyer, specifically on their large feature staircase and main reception desk. Part of the challenge was the size of the components and a mixture of hot and cold rolled steel. In addition, the building itself was to be left open for some time while construction went on leaving the staircase open to the elements. This would result in a serious risk of corrosion as traditional chemical blackening provides no protection to the steel from rust. Chemical blackening would have also required a lot of repairing on site which was a real concern for the client.
THE SOLUTION
We were able to use a real metal, cast-effect finish from our MetalAge Range which incorporates the crucial zinc layer for corrosion protection, but also gives an excellent aesthetic, aged finish from day one. MetalAge answered the concerns without detracting from the quality of finish required. Aesthetically it shows a handwork variation across the surface as well as giving areas of relief. MetalAge is a very durable finish which is low maintenance and easy to repair, which made it the finish of choice.
